St. Mary’s Medical Center Central Plant Expansion
Having opened in 1973, St. Mary’s Medical Center, located in Hobart, IN, has been meeting the daily needs of its patients for over 40 years. To meet the needs of a growing suburban population, the hospital, in 2013, approved building a new 4-story patient tower to provide additional capacity for patient expansion. YMI Mechanical was hired in the lead role as General Contractor to provide a turnkey and seamless construction process.
The project had an accelerated build schedule with specific milestone dates. The client issued a “Notice to Proceed” on December 23, 2013. Faced with an extremely tight time frame to carry out the updates, YMI Mechanical laid out the project into the three phases to be completed over a three month period as follows:
- Phase one required YMI Mechanical to ensure all major piping revisions and structural steel were in place. Completed and running by March 1, 2014, this deadline was achieved with seven days to spare.
- Phase two involved installation of a new 1,000-Ton centrifugal chiller, along with all associated electrical switchgear upgrades, electrical infrastructure and BAS controls. Start-up and testing met the milestone completion date of April 15, 2014.
- Phase three involved installation of a 350 horsepower boiler and associated piping modifications, electrical infrastructure upgrades, and a new BAS integration. Start-up and testing met the milestone completion date.
The addition of the chiller and boiler to the hospital’s central plant allows St. Mary’s the ability to provide additional capacity in efficiently heating and cooling their 4-story patient tower expansion.
